We are almost at the end of another year of Spanish and Latin American films in Stanford… Thanks! to everyone for sharing with us your passion for Spanish language films and for watching them with us each Thursday. As you probably know, this coming Thursday, December 13, we will screen the last film of this season: “SON OF THE BRIDE”, an Argentinean film directed by Juan José Campanella (2001).

After the movie we will share a potluck dinner to say good-bye to the 2007 season and pre-celebrate the New Year. Please, bring some food/drinks to share.

Javier Bardem es el encargado de poner el rostro al atormentado creador. Le acompañan Johnny Depp, Olivier Martinez y Sean Penn. En la banda sonora aparecen los nombres de Lou Reed y Laurie Anderson.

"The painter and film director Julian Schnabel has adapted the autobiography of the Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas, a homosexual poet who was persecuted by Fidel Castro’s regime and who died in New York in 1990. Javier Bardem has the job of playing this tormented creative artist, accompanied by Johnny Depp, Olivier Martínez and Sean Penn. The soundtrack was written by Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson."

Synopsis:
As land values in Patagonia, Argentina have skyrocketed in recent years, large corporations and wealthy individuals (from within Argentina as well as from overseas, such as Ted Turner, Sylvester Stallone, the Benetton family, or Joe "Hard Rock Cafe" Lewis) have been appropriating enormous tracts of land at the expense of those who have lived there for decades or centuries. Through threatened or real violence, fraudulent paperwork, and loopholes in the legal system, territory is transferred from those who inhabit it and work it as an integral part of their lives to gigantic, profit-making, feudal kingdoms. From high-end tourism to extremely destructive mining and forestry practices, land is being plundered for the benefit of a few and at the cost of those who have always stewarded it. This film documents and analyzes the growing land conflicts in Patagonia (similar to so many other parts of Argentina and the rest of Latin America) through the voices of its original inhabitants and commentary by other locals involved in the issue. By presenting a few particular cases, the film discusses the methods, motives, and consequences of these massive appropriations of territory and chronicles the resistance of indigenous communities, local citizens' assemblies, and individual families, in the face of adversity. 68 min, Spanish, with English subtitles.

Stanford's Center for Latin American Studies would like to continue its annual Spring Fiesta tradition by inviting all students, faculty, and staff with an interest in or connection to Latin America to eat, drink, and dance at the Bolivar House garden party on Thursday, May 24, 2007. A live band, Receita de Samba, will be playing Brazilian music from 5-7pm. Plus, there will be a demonstration by the Stanford Capoeira group. Meat lovers can enjoy the BBQ (or rodizio), but vegetarian options will also be provided. Alcoholic beverages will be available to those over 21, but non-alcoholic drinks will also be served. This event is open to the public.

"Historia de amor mágico realista en el México en tiempos de la Revolución. Esta basada en la novela de la escritora Laura Esquivel quien también la adaptó para el cine. La película es parte de la producción del director Alfonso Arau y fue realizada en México en 1992. Los personajes principales son Lumi Cavazos quien representa el papel de Tita la hija menor de Mamá Elena (Regina Torné). Tita tiene que postergar su relación con Pedro Musquiz (Mario Leonardi) porque las rígidas costumbres familiares la obligan a cuidar a su madre hasta que muera. La cocina se convierte en el refugio y la sede de una curiosa variante del poder femenino. Entre la comedia, el melodrama y el realismo mágico, la historia atraviesa por la Revolución Mexicana y presenta algunas ideas sobre la condición de la mujer, el machismo, y el amor. "
