7st JULY 2011 LA LEY DE HERODES by Luis Estrada

SINPOSIS: En 1949, durante el sexenio del presidente Miguel Alemán, el corrupto alcalde de San Pedro de los Saguaros es linchado y decapitado por los indígenas que habitan el lugar. Corren tiempos electorales y el gobernador no está dispuesto a ver peligrar su posición por un escándalo político, por lo que ordena a su secretario de gobierno, el licenciado López, que nombre un nuevo alcalde para San Pedro. López decide que el más indicado es Juan Vargas, un inofensivo y fiel miembro del partido que seguramente no será tan corrupto como su antecesor.

STORYLINE: After the corrupt former Mayor is killed by the peasants, poor janitor Juan Vargas is appointed new Mayor of a desert town in central Mexico. Although he tries to bring the motto of the ruling party to town (modernity, peace and progress) he realizes soon that there's nothing to do against corruption... except to become corrupt. Step by step, helped by his pistol, Juan Vargas becomes the law and the worst Major in the town's history.

SINPOSIS: El Dr. Martin Harris abre los ojos luego del accidente automovilístico que sufre en Berlín, cuando descubre que su esposa de repente no lo reconoce y otro hombre ha adoptado su identidad. Harris está solo, agotado y prófugo al ser ignorado por las autoridades incrédulas y perseguido por asesinos misteriosos. Asistido por una inverosímil aliada, Martin se mete de lleno en este gran misterio que lo llevará a cuestionarse su cordura, su identidad, y hasta qué punto está dispuesto a descubrir la verdad.

STORYLINE: Dr. Martin Harris, an American Bio-technologist, arrives in Berlin with his ravishing wife, Elizabeth to attend the Biotechnology Submit. On reaching the hotel, he finds some part of the luggage missing. He takes a cab back to the airport in order to locate the missing luggage, but before he could inform his wife the cab meets an accident and falls off the bridge into the river. The female driver of the cab, after rescuing him, flees from the scene. Dr. Harris is taken to a medical facility where he finally regains his consciousness after spending four days in comma. He seems to have a bout of temporary amnesia, but he soon remembers of his wife and the purpose of their visit to Berlin. He is suddenly overcome by a desperate urge to unite with his wife and he leaves the hospital immediately. On arriving at the hotel, he confronts the security to arrange for a meeting with his wife. To his dismay...

SINPOSIS: Cochabamba, Bolivia. Año 2000. Sebastián (Gael Garcia Bernal) y Costa (Luis Tosar) se han propuesto hacer una película sobre Cristóbal Colón y el descubrimiento de América. Mientras que Sebastián, el director, pretende desmitificar al personaje presentándolo como un hombre ambicioso y sin escrúpulos; a Costa, el productor, sólo le importa ajustar la película al modesto presupuesto del que disponen; precisamente por eso elige Bolivia, por ser uno de los países más baratos y con mayor población indígena de Hispanoamérica. La película se rueda en Cochabamba, donde la privatización y venta del agua a una multinacional siembra entre la población un malestar tal que hará estallar la tristemente famosa Guerra Boliviana del Agua (abril del año 2000). Quinientos años después del descubrimiento de América, palos y piedras se enfrentan de nuevo al acero y la pólvora de un ejército moderno. Pero esta vez no se lucha por el oro, sino por el más imprescindible de los elementos vitales: el agua.

STORYLINE: Spanish director Sebastian, his producer and all his crew are in Bolivia, in the Cochabamba area, to shoot a motion picture about Christopher Columbus, his first explorations and the way the Spaniards treated the Indians at the time. Costa has chosen this place because the budget of the film is tight and here he can hire local actors and extras on the cheap. Things go more or less smoothly until a conflict erupts over the privatization of the water supply. The trouble is that one of the local actors, is a leading activist in the protest movement...

STORYLINE: In the harsh post-war years' Catalan countryside, Andreu, a child that belongs to the losing side, finds the corpses of a man and his son in the forest. The authorities want his father to be made responsible of the deaths, but Andreu tries to help his father by finding out who truly killed them. In this search, Andreu develops a moral consciousness against a world of adults fed by lies. In order to survive, he betrays his own roots and ends up finding out the monster that lives within him.

STORYLINE: Starting off in the bloodiest period of Mexico’s past, The Desert Within begins with Elias in search of a priest (all of whom have been removed from towns and are locked away in monasteries for fear of their lives) to perform the last rights on his unborn son. The army attacks, the family escapes and along the way, Elias’ wife dies while giving birth to Aureliano. At this point, Elias finds himself cursed and he has a vision that outlines how he can save himself and his bretherin.

Las participantes de este proyecto audiovisual son ocho mujeres indígenas, alumnas de K'inal, una asociación de mujeres. El nombre K'inal Antzetik en la lengua maya tzeltal quiere decir Tierra de Mujeres.

El taller se desarrolló en el Centro de Formación y Capacitación en la ciudad de San Cristóbal de las Casas, donde adicionalmente se desarrolla un programa de formación permanente con el grupo de jóvenes indígenas residentes en diferentes niveles de escolarización –grado secundaria hasta universitario-.

The audiovisual project participants are eight indigenous women, students of K'inal, a women's association. The name K'inal Antzetik in the Mayan language Tzeltal means Land of Women.
The workshop was held at the Centre for Education and Training in the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, which further develops a continuing education program with the group of young indigenous people living in different levels of school-grade school through university.

19 MAY 2011 CLUB EUTANASIA

SINPOSIS: El Refugio es un asilo de ancianos dejado de la mano de Dios, regido por una déspota Directora (Ofelia Medina) que los trae prácticamente a pan y agua, condición que los internos no están dispuestos a seguir soportando, o por lo menos han de intentar capotear la situación de la manera más absurdamente divertida y patética.

Club Eutanasia (2005) es el debut como realizador de Agustín El Oso Tapia, quien a través del humor negro aborda la problemática de los ancianos olvidados, representados por un disparatado grupo de gente mayor que hacen de El Refugio escenario de un mortífero plan para “mejorar” su estadía en el recinto.

Adalberto (Lorenzo de Rodas) organiza una asociación secreta llamada Club Eutanasia, integrada por Evaristo (Héctor Gómez), Esperanza (Magda Guzmán) y Tere (Rosita Quintana), quienes se juegan a la suerte los destinos de los demás internos, a quienes planean matar para poder disfrutar de más atenciones.

El elenco de Club Eutanasia es completado por Eduardo Manzano El Polivoz, Xavier López Chabelo y Sergio Corona, figuras de gran tradición en la farándula mexicana.

El plan parece marchar de maravilla, pero el tiro les sale por la culata, desatándose una serie de enredos que van de la farsa al melancólico melodrama, en un ejercicio humorístico que llama a la reflexión en torno a nuestros adultos mayores.

STORYLINE: A nice dark comedy that makes you laugh at the time that makes you think about the cruel underworld of the older people. If you enjoyed films like LA COMUNIDAD you must see this flick. Great performances, specially by Héctor Gómez. This movie also makes the return into cinema a lot of legendary Mexican actors, like Magda Guzmán, Sergio Corona, Eduardo Manzano (El Polivoz), Rosita Quintana, Xavier López Chabelo... and has the good company of Ofelia Medina. This is some sort of geriatric FIGHT CLUB mixed with LOS OLVIDADOS and THE TENNANT. The director, Agustín "Oso" Tapia has a lot of talent and I hope to see more of his good and malicious ideas into screen very soon. Greeting for the Club Eutanasia!!!!!!!!!

SINOPSIS: Blanca Bravo es una policía idealista. Recién llegada a Ciudad Juárez se enfrenta a la epidemia local de muertas: cada mes, dos muertas en promedio vienen apareciendo. Todas ellas jóvenes y bonitas, y la mayor parte obreras de la maquila. La gente habla entre sí de un asesino serial.

Blanca se avoca a investigar los asesinatos con tesón. Su investigación la llevará a descubrir el centro de una sociedad en discordia, donde falla el Estado y donde la sociedad, invadida de fatalismo e indiferencia, falla también.

Pocos quieren abrir los ojos y ver qué sucede a su alrededor. Prefieren mirar a un lado y seguir con sus vidas como si nada pasara. Pero Blanca mira con ojos grandes lo que sucede, actúa en consecuencia, y de pronto se ve cara a cara con el horror.

Juanita Sánchez viene de Cintalapa, Tabasco, a trabajar en la maquila. Tiene 17 años, es trabajadora, es divertida. En cosa de tres meses se vuelve una mujer dueña de sí misma. 21 APRIL 2011 BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB

Cuando, en 1996, Ry Cooder viajó a Cuba para grabar un álbum con Ibrahim Ferrer y el resto de músicos que le habían acompañado antes en el disco Buena Vista Social Club y que en Cuba son conocidos como los Super-abuelos, Wenders le siguió con un reducido equipo de filmación. El cineasta alemán observó a los músicos en el estudio y rastreó sus vidas en La Habana, para después continuar rodando en Amsterdam, donde Buena Vista Social Club ofreció dos conciertos, y finalizar en Nueva York, con un recital espectacular en el legendario Carnerie Hall.

Aging Cuban musicians whose talents had been virtually forgotten following Castro's takeover of Cuba, are brought out of retirement by Ry Cooder, who travelled to Havana in order to bring the musicians together, resulting in triumphant performances of extraordinary music, and resurrecting the musicians' careers.

21 APRIL 2011 I'M CUBA/ YO SOY CUBA

Justo después de la Revolución Cubana de 1959 y la caída del la dictadura pro estadounidenses de Fulgencio Batista, el gobierno socialista de Fidel Castro, aislado por los Estados Unidos tras romper relaciones diplomáticas en 1961, miró hacia la Unión Soviética en busca de apoyo audiovisual. El gobierno soviético, interesado en promocionar internacionalmente el sistema comunista, se mostró de acuerdo en financiar y apoyar el film cubano.

El director obtuvo grandes dosis de libertad para llevar a cabo su cometido; igualmente recibió mucha ayuda de ambos gobiernos. Hicieron uso de técnicas fílmicas innovadoras, tales como sumergir una cámara y añadirle lentes herméticas con un periscopio especial. En un momento dado, más de un millar de soldados fueron trasladados a un remoto lugar para filmar una escena, a pesar de que la Crisis de los misiles estaba sucediendo en ese momento.

A pesar del enorme apoyo dado, la película fue recibida fríamente por el público. En La Habana fue criticada por mostrar el lado más estereotipado de los cubanos, y en Moscú fue considerada Naïf y no lo suficientemente revolucionaria. La película no fue capaz de atravesar el muro de Berlín debido a la Guerra Fría.

Cuando la Unión Soviética se derrumbó, Yo soy Cuba era completamente desconocida. En 1992, el escritor cubano Guillermo Cabrera Infante la visionó con ocasión del Festival de cine de Telluride en el marco de una retrospectiva de su director.

El Festival de cine de San Francisco la visionó en 1993 llevando a tres profesionales del cine que tuvieron la oportunidad de ver la película al contratar a Milestone Films en Nueva York. Esta pequeña distribuidora, que ha llevado a la pantalla varias cintas perdidas u olvidadas -y lo continúa haciendo- fue receptiva. Milestone visionó una cinta sin subtítulos en VHS, tras lo cual mostró su interés por adquirir los derechos de distribución en Rusia. En 1994, un amigo invitó a Martin Scorsese a un visionado privado. Scorsese se maravilló con la cinta y cuando Milestone le contactó para solicitar su presencia en la presentación de la película, no lo dudó.

El lanzamiento fue también presentado por otro admirador de Soy Cuba, el director Francis Ford Coppola también colaboró en la presentación de 1995. Para el décimo aniversario de la película, Milestone rehabilitó el metraje de 35mm.

This study of Cuba--partially written by renowned poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko--captures the island just before it made the transition to a post-revolutionary society. Moving from city to country and back again, I AM CUBA examines the various problems caused by political oppression as well as by great discrepancies in wealth and power. Beginning in Havana in the pre-Castro era, we see how foreigners contributed to the city's prostitution and poverty; this sequence features dreamy, hallucinogenic camera work that creates a feeling of unease and dislocation. Then, in glorious images of palm tress and fertile land, the film looks at the sugar cane fields in the countryside, and the difficulties faced by peasants working the land. Finally, back in the city again, leftist students battle the police and a corrupt government--and pay a high price for their rebellion. Written by Mr Bongo

Four vignettes in Batista's Cuba dramatize the need for revolution; long, mobile shots tell almost wordless stories. In Havana, Maria faces shame when a man who fancies her discovers how she earns her living. Pedro, an aging peasant, is summarily told that the land he farms has been sold to United Fruit. A university student faces down a crowd of swaggering U.S. sailors and then watches friends shot by police when they try to distribute a pro-Castro leaflet. The war arrives on the doorstep of peasants Mariano, Amelia, and their four children when Batista's forces bomb the hills. Mariano wants peace, so he seeks out the guerrillas to join the fight.

Un científico vampiro ha creado el Vampisol, una pócima revolucionaria, que permite a los vampiros pasear bajo la luz del Sol. En cuanto la noticia llega a oídos de los grandes clanes de vampiros, todos viajan a La Habana para hacerse con el control de la fórmula: los estirados y siniestros vampiros europeos, y los mafiosos vampiros norteamericanos. Pepito, un trompetista, sobrino del creador de Vampisol, será perseguido por ambos grupos desde que se le encarga la custodia de la fórmula.

A scientist invents a potion that allows vampires to be able to live under the rays of the sun. When the word gets out to the vampires of the world, they fly to Cuba to gain control of the potion. It becomes a battle between the American and the East European vampires. A trumpet player is the scientist's nephew and holds the formula for the elixir.

Un obrero ejemplar es enterrado con su carnet laboral en reconocimiento a sus méritos, pero su viuda no puede cobrar la pensión sin este documento. El sobrino del difunto vive alucinantes aventuras para recuperar el carnet de la tumba de su tío.
"Un golpe de ataúd en tierra es algo perfectamente serio", escribió Antonio Machado, y lo es siempre que el cadáver no arrastre consigo sus documentos de identidad en medio de un remolino burocrático, porque entonces se desata el absurdo. Esta película es una sátira social que disfruta denunciando un viejo mal, sus consecuencias y derivaciones, con el desenfado que caracteriza el humor criollo y caribeño.
