28th "El Mural" by Héctor Olivera

La historia relata las distintas circunstancias que llevaron al pintor David Alfaro Siqueiros a realizar, durante los meses que estuvo en Argentina en los años treinta, el famoso mural de 200 metros cuadrados, Ejercicio Plástico, en el piso, paredes y techo en forma de bóveda del sótano de la quinta Los Granados, propiedad de Natalio Félix Botana, el millonario propietario del periódico Crítica. Siqueiros realiza el mural con la colaboración de los pintores argentinos Lino Enea Spilimbergo, Antonio Berni, Juan Carlos Castagnino y el pintor uruguayo Enrique Lázaro.

Este mural es el leit motiv para contar una historia que tiene intriga, sexo, traiciones, mentiras y hasta cierto sentido del humor entre los principales personajes: Siqueiros, su esposa, la poeta uruguaya Blanca Luz Brum, Botana, su mujer Salvadora Medina Onrubia y el poeta chileno Pablo Neruda, y, como una suerte de personaje más, la quinta Los Granados, en la que transcurre la historia. La película trata de reflejar el clima político de la época y el conflicto de un pintor, defensor del concepto del arte como experiencia para las masas y comunista activo realizando en una casa privada un mural que sólo verían los amigos de su millonario dueño.


While in Argentina, renowned Mexican muralist David Siqueiros (Bruno Bichir) paints the mural “Ejercicio plástico” at the country home of newspaper owner Natalio Botana (Luis Machín). Set in the 1930s, this lovely historical reconstruction serves as a testament to the creation of a masterpiece, while depicting the controversial private and public events that shaped its materialization.

Thursday 21st "Tesis" by Alejandro Amenábar

Ángela prepara una tesis doctoral sobre la violencia audiovisual, su director de tesis, descubre accidentalmente una película y al día siguiente aparece muerto.
Ángela y Chema, un compañero de facultad, deciden llevarse la cinta, descubriendo que se trata de una película snuff-movie en la que una chica es torturada y asesinada. Un mundo audiovisual diferente y peligroso se abre ante ellos. Ángela puede ser la protagonista de la siguiente snuff-movie.


Ángela (Torrent) is a film student at the Madrid's University Complutense. Searching for research material for her thesis (hence the film's title) on audio-visual violence, she attains the friendship of Chema (Martínez), a fellow student and introvert with an encyclopedic collection of violent and pornographic films.
After her professor dies while watching a film she steals the videotape, discovering that it is a snuff film featuring a girl whom Chema recognizes as a former student at the university - and a former associate of current student Bosco (Noriega). Investigating the origins of the tape, they are drawn into the operations of a chilling snuff ring.

February 14th "Dias de Santiago" by Josué Méndez

Santiago Roman (Pietro Sibille) es un excombatiente de la Marina de Guerra del Perú que peleó contra el narcotráfico y el terrorismo en su país, y tomando parte del conflicto del Cenepa contra Ecuador de 1995. Ha pasado tanto tiempo en claustros castrenses que no sabe desenvolverse en la vida civil, y menos en una ciudad de tantos contrastes como Lima. Al final de la obra su incapacidad de integrarse le ocasionará trastornos y lo hará dejarse llevar por sus impulsos.

A 23-year-old Peruvian Navy veteran struggles to re-integrate himself into society only to hit a series of roadblocks both societal and psychological, in the feature directorial debut from Peruvian filmmaker Josue Mendez. Santiago Roman (Pietro Sibille) has just returned to Peru following six years of military service. Coolly received by his parents and unable to find a stable, well-paying job, the dejected Santiago's attempt to further his education is quickly squelched when he discovers that his military pension doesn't offer the money needed to pay his way through school. Though Santiago eventually lands a low-paying job as an inner-city taxi driver, his disdain for the scum of the city finds the formerly virile young soldier sinking into a deep-rooted depression. When a group of Santiago's former military buddies hatch a plan to rob a local bank, the conflicted veteran must choose between an honest life of poverty and an act of desperation that could end in tragedy.

February 7th "Medianeras" by Gustavo Taretto

Mariana y Martín viven en la misma manzana en diferentes edificios; pero, aunque sus caminos se cruzan, no llegan a encontrarse. Martín diseña páginas web. Mariana es arquitecta, pero trabaja como decoradora de vidrieras. Además de desilusiones recientes, los dos tienen muchas cosas en común. Viven en el centro de Buenos Aires. La ciudad los une y a la vez los separa.

Sidewalls (Medianeras) is a clever romantic comedy examining with charm how the architecture of a city conditions the lives of two of its residents. Taretto pays homage to the city of Buenos Aires as he reflects on how urban chaos, as well as new technologies, can unite people but also keep them apart (as the sidewalls of the title). Mixing animation, photography and graphic art he reveals the characters' isolation and anxieties that are a staple of modern life in a noisy city that nonetheless has an irresistible charm.

January 31th "El viento se llevo lo que" by Alejando Agresti

En un pequeño pueblo de la Patagonia argentina, aislado del resto del mundo, el cine es el único entretenimiento y contacto con el mundo exterior. Un día Soledad, una mujer de Buenos Aires, roba el taxi en el que trabaja y llega al pueblo al tratar de huir lo más lejos posible de su entorno. Allí descubrirá el peculiar comportamiento de sus vecinos, condicionado por el cine y las condiciones de proyección de las películas (cuyos rollos se alteran de la misma forma que el título de la película), y se enamorará del crítico del pueblo, un apasionado de un actor francés ya retirado.

Argentine director Alejando Agresti directed this surreal, allegorical Argentine-French-Dutch- Spanish comedy-drama. Winner of the "Golden Shell Grand Prize" at the 1998 San Sebastian Film Festival, the absurdist tale is set during the '70s. Young Buenos Aires cabdriver Soledad (Vera Fogwill), tired of fending off molesting passengers and dealing with her exploitative boss, keeps driving her cab straight out of the city and into the mountains, arriving at a remote and dusty Patagonian village, Rio Pico. The town's only contact with the outside world is a cinema which shows film reels out of sequence or upside-down -- as referenced in the title's reversal of Gone With the Wind. This has impacted on local inhabitants, causing them to speak in non sequiturs. Soledad checks into an inn run by Doña Maria (Angela Molina), and when locals find out she was a journalism student, they ask her to host their newsreels about life in Rio Pico.

January 24th "El método" by Marcelo Piñeyro

Siete aspirantes a un puesto ejecutivo se presentan a la prueba de selección de personal de una empresa multinacional, situada en un rascacielos de Madrid. Sus personalidades son de lo más dispar: el triunfador, el agresivo, la mujer insegura, el crítico, el indeciso. En un clima de tensa competitividad, el miedo y las dudas se irán apoderando de los participantes, que caen en un estado de paranoia tal que llegan a sospechar que están siendo observados por cámaras o que, entre ellos, puede haber un psicólogo infiltrado que ya los está evaluando. Esta atmósfera claustrofóbica pone de manifiesto la falta de escrúpulos de los aspirantes.


During IMF & World Bank Summit and demonstrations which upset Madrid, like other capitals, major corporation Dekia holds interviews to recruit a top executive from seven applicants. Their doubts start when they have to sign a clause accepting the Grönholm method, which nobody ever heard of. It soon becomes clear the tests are dirty mind games, but never what is true and what the trick. They must guess who among them is the HR mole, and repeatedly eliminate one of their number from the procedure. Their priorities, ethics and loyalty are put trough stressing tests.

January 17th "El hombre de al lado" by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat

La película narra un conflicto entre vecinos que parece no tener fin. Una simple pared medianera puede dividir dos mundos, dos maneras de vestir, de comer, de vivir. De un lado Leonardo (Rafael Spregelburd), fino y prestigioso diseñador que vive en una casa realizada por Le Corbusier. Del otro lado Víctor (Daniel Aráoz), vendedor de coches usados, vulgar, rústico y avasallador. Víctor decide hacer una ventana para tener más luz, y ahí empieza el problema: cada uno toma conciencia de la existencia del otro.

A small incident over two neighbors common wall sparks a conflict which affects the intimacy of the view over the chimney; the protagonist sparks a conflict and with paranoiac obsession destroys everyday life.

December 15th "Los Días sin Joyce" by Anna Soler Cepriá & Agustín Oso Tapia

En 1930, la American Smelting & Refining Company contrata a William Parker para trabajar en las minas de Angangueo, Michoacán. Bill, como lo llamaban sus amigos, llegó acompañado de su pareja, una fotógrafa llamada Joyce Hartzell. Bill era aficionado al cine. Joyce tomaba fotografías de todo ese mundo que la asombraba. Un diario escrito por Bill relata sus últimos días juntos: desde la muerte de Joyce hasta su propio suicidio.

In 1930, the American Smelting & Refining Company hired William "Bill" Parker to work at the Angangueo mines in Michoacán. Bill arrived with his girlfriend, Joyce Hartzell, a photographer. Bill and Joyce fell in love with the town and its simple ways and decided to make it their permanent home. Bill was an amateur filmmaker and used his 16mm camera to shoot several documentaries portraying day-to-day life in Angangueo and Joyce’s trips around Spain and South America. But Joyce died in 1975, victim to pulmonary cancer, and 36 days later, Bill shot himself in the head. Bill’s diary describes those last few days: from Joyce’s passing to his own suicide. The movies and photographs made by the Parkers over the years become the material that relives their memories and tells the story of these two lovers that even death couldn’t tear apart.

December 6th "Habana Station" by Ian Padrón

Las experiencias de dos amigos y colegas de aula durante el 1ro de mayo; una historia que revela caras distintas de la realidad cubana, desde la cotidianeidad de un par de niños, en la Habana de hoy.
La Tinta es un barrio marginal de nombre imaginario, próximo a la Plaza de la Revolución. Este será el principal escenario donde Mayito descubrirá la otra Cuba en la que vive Carlos, bien alejada de su lujosa casa en Miramar. Tras perderse en el multitudinario desfile, el niño llega por accidente a la periférica comunidad donde vive su colega de grupo, quien hasta entonces, le había resultado totalmente ajeno.

The experiences of two friends and colleagues in the classroom during May first; a story that reveals different sides of the Cuban reality through the everyday life of two kids in the Havana of today.
The Ink is a marginal neighborhood next to the Plaza of the Revolution. This will be the main stage where Mayito discover another Cuba in the living Carlos, well away from his luxurious home in Miramar. After getting lost in the massive parade, the child comes by accident to the community where you live peripheral group colleague, who until then had been totally oblivious.

November 28th "Pudor" by David Ulloa & Tristán Ulloa

Pudor es una mirada a la intimidad, a los deseos, obsesiones, secretos y miedos que no confesamos ni siquiera a quienes más queremos. Ese pudor conduce a la incomunicación y a la soledad. Los personajes de esta historia son los miembros de una familia de clase media con problemas: un hombre que va a morir, una mujer que recibe anónimos eróticos, un hombre mayor a quien el amor tiende una última oportunidad, una adolescente que intenta superar las dudas que le genera la pubertad y un niño que ve fantasmas. Al igual que en muchas familias, todos los personajes de Pudor, a pesar de vivir juntos están solos.

Pudor is about intimacy, about the desires, obsessions, secrets and fears that we keep hidden, even from those we love most. The characters in this story are a man who is going to die, a woman who receives anonymous erotic notes, an older man who is offered a last chance at falling in love, a teenager struggling to handle the doubts generated by puberty and a small boy who sees ghosts. As is the case in many families, in spite of living together, all the characters in Pudor are alone.

November 15th "Memorias del Subdesarrollo" by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea

Que las contradicciones del burgués pueden reflejar como en un espejo las de la sociedad donde la burguesía ha llevado la voz cantante, lo demuestra esta historia de razonamiento e ironía. Una historia personal que hubiera sido intrascendente de no ocurrir en los vertiginosos días de la revolución, cuando todas las contradicciones se pusieron al rojo vivo. La película entrega un monólogo interior con mirada a la calle, como es la novela homónima de Edmundo Desnoes. 

Sergio (Sergio Corrieri - Soy Cuba), through his life following the departure of his wife, parents and friends in the wake of the Bay of Pigs incident. Alone in a brave new world, Sergio observes the constant threat of foreign invasion while chasing young women all over Havana before finally meeting Elena (Daisy Granados), a young virgin girl he seeks to mould into the image of his ex-wife, but at what cost to himself?

César es el portero de un edificio de apartamentos y no cambiaría este trabajo por ningún otro, ya que le permite conocer a fondo los movimientos, los hábitos más íntimos, los puntos débiles y los secretos de todos los inquilinos. Si quisiera podría incluso controlar sus vidas, influir en ellas como si fuera Dios, abrir sus heridas y hurgar en ellas. Y todo sin levantar ninguna sospecha. Porque César guarda un secreto muy peculiar: le gusta hacer daño, mover las piezas necesarias para producir dolor a su alrededor. Y la nueva vecina del 5ºB no deja de sonreír. Toiling silently amongst the residents of an everyday Barcelona apartment building, doorman Cesar (Luis Tosar) harbors a dark secret: his sole desire in life is to make others unhappy. October 25th "Juan de los Muertos" by Alejandro Brugués

El jueves, 25 de Octubre, pasaremos "Juan de los Muertos", una película de Alejandro Brugués (2011).

SINOPSIS:
Una horda de zombis ávidos de carne humana asola las calles de La Habana. Se extiende el rumor de que los responsables de la situación son grupos al servicio de los Estados Unidos. El pánico se apodera de la gente; en medio de la confusión aparece una especie de héroe: Juan (Díaz de Villegas), que, con el eslogan "Juan de los muertos, matamos a sus seres queridos", se ofrece a la gente para eliminar, por un módico precio, a sus familiares infectados.

STORYLINE:
Juan is a slacker trying to reconnect with his daughter, who plans to rejoin her mother in Miami. Lazaro, Juan's friend, is trying to connect with his own son, a persistent womanizer. They begin to notice that locals are "going crazy", killing people and eating their flesh, and the recently deceased are returning to life. The Cuban government and the media claim that the zombies are dissidents revolting against the government. Juan starts a business to profit off of killing the zombies, but the group may soon find their own lives at risk.

Based on Gabriel García Márquez's novel, this is the unsettling story of 13-year-old noble Sierva and the dog bite that changes her life forever. Abandoned, displaced, in the midst of a sexual awakening and finally exorcised, Sierva finds an unlikely ally in a young priest and together they discover passion.

October 11th "La estrategia del caracol" by Sergio Cabrera

Los vecinos de uno de los barrios más pobres de Bogotá luchan para evitar el derribo de la casa donde viven, que es propiedad de un millonario sin escrúpulos. Aunque su lucha contra la especulación y la corrupción parece perdida de antemano, ponen en práctica una original estrategia ideada por don Jacinto, un viejo anarquista español.

A group of tenants living in an old house are confronted with having to move out due to a renovation project the city has undertaken. The tenants decide to unite and come up with a strategy, but in the process—while the landlord and his aggressive attorney are chasing them—the tenants transform into the opposite of who they once were. The thief becomes an honorable man, the priest falls in love… and all of the tenants take ownership towards a common goal.

October 4th "Rodrigo D: No futuro" by Victor Gaviria

Rodrigo no tiene todavía 20 años. Está en una ventana del último piso de un céntrico edificio en Medellín. Va a saltar sobre esa ciudad que lo oprime, lo llama, lo margina. No tiene otra opción, le grita a la ciudad. El tiempo se detiene y ahí está todo lo que ha sido su vida y lo que la rodea.

Rodrigo and his friends are bored teenagers living in Medellin. Rodrigo wants to start a punk band. The youths mainly loaf around the hillside shanty towns and, for kicks, steal a bike or car, or shoot someone.

En Octubre Ciclo de Cine Colombiano / In October Colombian Movies Series

Desde Cine Stanford queremos dedicar este mes al Cine Colombiano.

Dedicaremos con tres películas un humilde homenaje a este cine creciente y que nos ha dejado algunos clásicos que no debemos pasar por alto. Resaltaremos la figura del director Victor Gaviria, repasaremos un clásico como “La Escalera de Caracol” y nos gustaría recordar una novela de Gabriel García Márquez en una co-producción Colombia- Costa Rica.

Colombia tiene muchas cosas por explicar y aquí va un pequeño relato de ellas, esperemos hacer disfrutar al público.

Como siempre os esperamos en nuestra nueva sala en Jordan Hall.

From Stanford Cinema we want to dedicate this month to Colombian Cinema.
Devote three movies a humble tribute to this movie growing and it has some classics that we should not overlook. We will highlight the figure of the director Victor Gaviria, we review a classic like "The Spiral Staircase" and we would like to remember a novel by Gabriel García Márquez in a co-production Colombia-Costa Rica.
Colombia has many things to explain and here's a little story of them, hopefully make audiences enjoy.
As always we look forward to our new room in Jordan Hall.

Con sólo cinco años, el pequeño Natan siente que este viaje con su papá Jorge no es un viaje más, sino el capítulo previo a abandonar la tierra mexicana –paterna– rumbo a la de los orígenes de su mamá –italiana–. Sin embargo, la ruptura familiar del pasado, lejos de convertirse en un nudo traumático, abre una nueva perspectiva para padre e hijo en su trayecto hacia el arrecife de coral de Banco Chinchorro, donde el vínculo entre ellos crece al ritmo del contacto con la naturaleza. Bucear en Alamar, junto a los personajes, nos permite expandir todo un mundo de experiencias que se transmiten o se dejan incorporar; como si esta sorprendente –extática, lírica, oceánica– película de González Rubio siempre tuviera nuevos secretos escondidos para revelarnos, y para hallarlos debiese nadar entre el documental y la ficción.

A young boy and his father learn about living in harmony with nature in this languid drama from filmmaker Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio. A man from Mexico (Jorge Machado) travels to Italy and falls in love with a beautiful local woman (Roberta Palombini). Their feelings for one another are strong, but they prove to be short lived, and when they decide to beak up after the birth of their son Natan, he returns to Mexico while she stays in Italy and takes primary custody of the child.
