En Octubre Ciclo de Cine Colombiano / In October Colombian Movies Series

Desde Cine Stanford queremos dedicar este mes al Cine Colombiano.

Dedicaremos con tres películas un humilde homenaje a este cine creciente y que nos ha dejado algunos clásicos que no debemos pasar por alto. Resaltaremos la figura del director Victor Gaviria, repasaremos un clásico como “La Escalera de Caracol” y nos gustaría recordar una novela de Gabriel García Márquez en una co-producción Colombia- Costa Rica.

Colombia tiene muchas cosas por explicar y aquí va un pequeño relato de ellas, esperemos hacer disfrutar al público.

Como siempre os esperamos en nuestra nueva sala en Jordan Hall.

From Stanford Cinema we want to dedicate this month to Colombian Cinema.
Devote three movies a humble tribute to this movie growing and it has some classics that we should not overlook. We will highlight the figure of the director Victor Gaviria, we review a classic like "The Spiral Staircase" and we would like to remember a novel by Gabriel García Márquez in a co-production Colombia-Costa Rica.
Colombia has many things to explain and here's a little story of them, hopefully make audiences enjoy.

Con sólo cinco años, el pequeño Natan siente que este viaje con su papá Jorge no es un viaje más, sino el capítulo previo a abandonar la tierra mexicana –paterna– rumbo a la de los orígenes de su mamá –italiana–. Sin embargo, la ruptura familiar del pasado, lejos de convertirse en un nudo traumático, abre una nueva perspectiva para padre e hijo en su trayecto hacia el arrecife de coral de Banco Chinchorro, donde el vínculo entre ellos crece al ritmo del contacto con la naturaleza. Bucear en Alamar, junto a los personajes, nos permite expandir todo un mundo de experiencias que se transmiten o se dejan incorporar; como si esta sorprendente –extática, lírica, oceánica– película de González Rubio siempre tuviera nuevos secretos escondidos para revelarnos, y para hallarlos debiese nadar entre el documental y la ficción.

A young boy and his father learn about living in harmony with nature in this languid drama from filmmaker Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio. A man from Mexico (Jorge Machado) travels to Italy and falls in love with a beautiful local woman (Roberta Palombini). Their feelings for one another are strong, but they prove to be short lived, and when they decide to beak up after the birth of their son Natan, he returns to Mexico while she stays in Italy and takes primary custody of the child.

Hola de nuevo a todos y todas.
Cine Stanford está de regreso a las pantallas. Han sido dos meses de descanso y preparación de esta nueva temporada que se avecina con algunos cambios.
Para empezar la nueva ubicación: Cine Stanford estará este año en Jordan Hall (Edificio 420, sala 041).
El programa de esta nueva temporada se inicia con la película mexicana "Alamar", para seguir con un ciclo de cine Colombiano, retomar nuestro ciclo de dos películas para Hallowen y seguir con aclamados estrenos de cine iberoamericano.

Cinema Stanford is coming back to the screens after two months of relax and preparation of a new season that brings some changes.
Cine Stanford moves to a new location: screenings will now take place at Jordan Hall (Building 420, room 041).
The new program starts with the mexican film "Alamar", then continues with a Colombian movies series, followed by two movies selected for Halloween and premiere movies shot in Spanish or other regional languages.

July 5th "Viridiana" by Luis Buñuel

Don Jaime (Fernando Rey), un viejo hidalgo español, vive retirado y solitario en su hacienda desde la muerte de su esposa, ocurrida el mismo día de la boda. Un día recibe la visita de su sobrina Viridiana (Silvia Pinal), novicia en un convento, que tiene un gran parecido con su mujer.

Viridiana, a young novice about to take her final vows as a nun, accedes to a request from her widowed uncle to visit him. Moved purely by a sense of obligation, she does so. Her uncle is moved by her resemblance to his late wife to attempt to seduce Viridiana, and tragedy ensues. In the aftermath, Viridiana tries to assuage her guilt by creating a haven for the destitute folk who live around her uncle's estate. But from these good intentions, too, comes little good.

After a lavish dinner party, the guests find themselves mysteriously unable to leave the room... and over the next few days all the elaborate pretenses and facades that they've built up by virtue of their position in society collapse completely as they become reduced to living like animals...

En el transcurso de una noche, dos jóvenes amigos, Jaque y Mudo, viven una aventura insólita: tienen que encontrar la manera de que su jefe, Óscar Cabos, un temible magnate y padre de Paulina, novia de Jaque, regrese sano y salvo a su casa, ya que por extrañas circunstancias... se encuentra encerrado en el capot de su coche. Paralelamente, Botcha y su amigo Nico intentan secuestrar al magnate Cabos con intenciones de pedir una gran suma de dinero como rescate y vengar el pasado humillante del padre de Botcha. Sin embargo, en la oscuridad existe una confusión de cuerpos y los planes fallan para los buenos, los malos y los feos. 

 

In Mexico City, the powerful and violent magnate of steel Oscar Cabos catches his daughter Paulina having sex with her boyfriend and his employee Javier "Jaque" and he works Jaque over. On the next day, Jaque pays a visit to Cabos in his office and the angry man comes with a golf club to hit Jaque again. However, Cabos accidentally trips on a golf ball, falls on the floor and faints. Jaque calls his best friend Mudo to help him, but the janitor Nacho finds his boss fainted on the floor and he steals and dresses himself with Cabos' clothes and jewels. Meanwhile, Nacho's son Botcha and his friend Nico have planned to kidnap Cabos and they are waiting for him in the parking garage. When he walks in the parking garage, the two kidnappers hit him on the back of the head, believing that he is Cabos, they cover his head with a bag. They head with the abducted man to the house of Botcha's girlfriend Lula...

The Burning Plain follows the story of several different people separated by time and space -Sylvia, a woman in Oregon who must undertake an emotional odyssey to rid herself of her past; Mariana and Santiago, two teenagers trying to piece together the shattered lives of their parents in a New Mexico border town; Maria, a little girl who goes on a border-crossing voyage to help her parents find redemption, forgiveness, and love; and Gina and Nick, a couple who must deal with an intense and clandestine affair... because they are both married.

Parece que va a empezar un día normal cuando los residentes de California se levantan durante otro amanecer soleado. Pero, sorprendentemente, poco a poco comienzan a darse cuenta de que toda la población latina del estado norteamericano ha sido barrida del mapa…

A thick fog surrounds California's borders, communication beyond state lines is cut off, and the Mexicans disappear: workers, spouses, and business owners are missing. Cars are abandoned in the street, food is left cooking on the stove. We meet the wife of a musician who's gone, a state Senator whose maid doesn't show up for work, and a farm owner whose produce is ripe and unpicked. A scientist asks any Mexicans who haven't disappeared to volunteer for genetic experiments: a female newscaster and the daughter of the musician may be the only missing links around. Why them? And where have all the Mexicans gone? Even the border guards grieve. The state and its economy grind to a halt.

SINOPSIS: 

Alexa Vega, encarna a Paula Crisóstomo, una promisoria estudiante de secundaria en una escuela de Los Angeles. En el transcurso de la película, Paula despierta a sus inquietudes políticas y se convierte en dirigente estudiantil, organizando protestas para reclamar derechos básicos. Dirigida por Edward James Olmos , que también actúa en un pequeño papel, como uno de los miembros de la junta escolar que consigue que ésta considere las peticiones de los estudiantes. Entre ellas se incluye algo tan básico como poder hablar español y tener acceso a los baños. Además, desde la comida mexicana en los restaurantes hasta, por supuesto, el derecho a seguir una carrera universitaria.

Based on a true story, student activist and Mexican-American Paula Crisostomo (Vega), tired of being treated unequally, decides to take action and stage a walkout at five East Los Angeles high schools in 1968, to protest educational conditions and complain of anti-Mexican educational bias along with some 10,000 students. Paula Crisostomo (now Romo) is not Mexican- American--she is Filipina-American. She and her husband, then boyfriend were roommates of mine in college. We are very good friends and I see her often.

Ciclo de cine Chicano May 5th to 31st at Cine Stanford

CICLO DE CINE CHICANO

El pasado mes de abril se celebraba el Cesar Chavez Day y en este mayo tendremos la fiesta del 5 de mayo. Bajo este pretexto Cine Stanford quiere seguir abriendo caminos hacia el cine latino dedicando un ciclo al cine Chicano. En lo que va de año todavía nos habíamos programado ningún ciclo, acercarnos al Cine Latino hecho en Estados Unidos nos parece una buena manera de proponer el primero del año.

Es un registro que se vienen dando desde finales de los años 60, pero es entre finales de los 90 y la primera década del siglo XXI donde el cine Chicano ha dado un salto espectacular y ha posicionado el cine Latino hecho en Estados unidos en los mejores festivales independientes.

Sin alejarse de una crítica social sobre las dificultades de lo que significa ser Latino en Estados unidos, unido a los tabúes que la propia comunidad ha creado en su comunidades, el Cine Chicano se muestra abierto a reflexiones, pero pidiendo respeto y justicia y sus derechos como ciudadanos de este país.

Nos iremos dejando llevar desde cine mas reivindicativo sobre los derechos migrantes en este país hasta historias cotidianas que reflejan como culturalmente la comunidad latina se ha ido adaptando a su nueva casa.

El ciclo estará compuesto por las siguientes películas.

Les invitamos a compartir este nuevo ciclo, más cercano a nuestro entorno dado que muchas de las películas han sido rodadas y ambientadas en California y conociendo las reflexiones y puntos de vista expuestos en las películas desde la comunidad Latina nacida en Estados Unidos.

CHICANO MOVIE SERIES

"Cesar Chavez Day" last April and the upcoming celebration of "Cinco de Mayo" bring CineStanford the perfect excuse to open new avenues to the Latin Cinema by dedicating our first film series of this year to the Latin cinema made in the US, the Chicano Cinema.
Chicano Cinema origins date from the late 60's, but it is not until the 90's and the first decade of  the 21st century when this cinema made a spectacular rise and positioned Latin movies made by mexican americans in the best independent movie festivals.
The chicano movies prompt us to a reflection on the social difficulties that Latins face in the US, while asking for respect, justice and equal rights as citizens of this country. We will let ourselves be swept away by movies that range from strong calls for immigrant rights to the everyday reality of Latin communities adapting to their new home.
Our Chicano movie series will include:

- "A better life", from Chris Weitz
- "Sangre de mi sangre", from Christopher Zalla

Raquel, una mujer agria e introvertida, lleva 23 años trabajando de niñera para los Valdés, una familia de clase alta de Santiago. Un día, Pilar, su patrona, contrata a otra niñera para ayudarla. Raquel, sintiendo peligrar su lugar en la familia, espanta a la recién llegada con crueles e infantiles maltratos psicológicos. Esta situación se repite una y otra vez hasta que llega Lucy, una risueña mujer de provincias, que logra atravesar la coraza de Raquel y cambiar su forma de ver la vida.

The story of how a maid called Raquel, who has worked for over 20 years in one affluent Chilean household, rediscovers herself. La Nana is a microcosm of Latin social hierarchy while also focusing on one woman's journey to free herself from a mental servitude of her own making.

1968. Ignacio Carrillo, un juglar que durante años recorrió pueblos y regiones llevando cantos con su acordeón, toma la decisión de hacer un último viaje, a través de toda la región norte de Colombia, para devolverle el instrumento a su anciano maestro, y así nunca más volver a tocar. Junto a un joven, Fermín, emprende un recorrido por la enorme diversidad de la cultura caribeña, viviendo todo tipo de aventuras y encuentros. Seleccionada por Colombia como candidata al Oscar 2010 en la categoría de película de habla no inglesa.

For most of his life, Ignacio Carrillo traveled the villages of northern Colombia, playing traditional songs on his accordion, a legendary instrument said to have once belonged to the devil. He eventually married and settled in a small town, leaving the nomadic life behind. But after the traumatic death of his wife, he vows to never play the accursed accordion again, and embarks on one last journey to return the instrument to its rightful owner. On the way, Ignacio is followed by Fermín, a spirited teenager determined to become his apprentice. Tired of loneliness, Ignacio accepts the young man as his pupil and together they traverse the vast Colombian terrain, discovering the musical diversity of Caribbean culture. Hardened by a life of solitude, Ignacio tries to discourage Fermín from following in his footsteps, but destiny has different plans for them.

April 12nd "Roma" by Adolfo Aristarain

La irrupción del periodista Manuel Cueto en la vida del escritor Joaquín Góñez, a instancias de la editorial para la que Joaquín está escribiendo su último libro, provocará un gran desasosiego en la solitaria vida de este hombre que vive de espaldas al mundo y rehuye sus propios recuerdos. Acostumbrado a la soledad, el encuentro con el joven periodista despertará en él emociones olvidadas que lo transportan a la época de su niñez y a su locos años de juventud en Buenos Aires: los errores de la inexperiencia, el recuerdo de los amigos, de la lealtad, la influencia del cine y del jazz, el sabor del primer amor, y la íntima relación con sus padres, especialmente con su madre, Roma, una mujer inteligente, fuerte, comprensiva y comprometida con los ideales de juventud de su hijo. When journalist Manuel Cueto is hired to type novelist Joaquín Góñez's last book, his presence provokes an avalanche of feelings that bring Joaquín to the edge of emotions and memories that had lain dormant in the solitude of the last stages of his creative life. Accustomed to years of loneliness, Joaquín finds in the young journalist a bridge to the forgotten years of his youth in the 60's and 70's, during his wild years in Buenos Aires. Argentina had been witness to the mistakes made in the passage to adulthood, the memories of old friends, the meaning of loyalty, the influences of cinema and jazz, the taste of first love and the experiences of the many which followed and the intimate relationship with his parents, particulary with his mother Roma, a strong, intelligent woman, a supporter of his youthful ideals. April 5th "El Sueño del Caiman" by Beto Gómez

Iñaki (Daniel Guzmán) es un malvividor que sustenta sus días como ladrón a base de pequeños golpes de poca monta. Pero tras un atraco fallido se ve obligado a salir de España y hui hacia México, donde vive su padre. Allí descubrirá muchas cosas, mentiras y verdades de su vida, en el seno de un grupo de soñadores.

A thief discovers that crime runs in the family in this playfully dark comedy from Mexico. Inaki (Daniel Guzman) is a petty thief who makes his way pulling stickups with an elderly partner in crime (Francisco Rabal). The old man dies in the midst of a robbery, which attracts more police attention than Inaki is used to, and he flees to Mexico until things cool down. In Guadalajara, Inaki finds himself crossing paths with Patxi (Kandido Uranga), his father, with whom Inaki hasn't always been on good terms.
