SINOPSIS: 

Alexa Vega, encarna a Paula Crisóstomo, una promisoria estudiante de secundaria en una escuela de Los Angeles. En el transcurso de la película, Paula despierta a sus inquietudes políticas y se convierte en dirigente estudiantil, organizando protestas para reclamar derechos básicos. Dirigida por Edward James Olmos , que también actúa en un pequeño papel, como uno de los miembros de la junta escolar que consigue que ésta considere las peticiones de los estudiantes. Entre ellas se incluye algo tan básico como poder hablar español y tener acceso a los baños. Además, desde la comida mexicana en los restaurantes hasta, por supuesto, el derecho a seguir una carrera universitaria.

Based on a true story, student activist and Mexican-American Paula Crisostomo (Vega), tired of being treated unequally, decides to take action and stage a walkout at five East Los Angeles high schools in 1968, to protest educational conditions and complain of anti-Mexican educational bias along with some 10,000 students. Paula Crisostomo (now Romo) is not Mexican- American--she is Filipina-American. She and her husband, then boyfriend were roommates of mine in college. We are very good friends and I see her often.

Ciclo de cine Chicano May 5th to 31st at Cine Stanford

CICLO DE CINE CHICANO

El pasado mes de abril se celebraba el Cesar Chavez Day y en este mayo tendremos la fiesta del 5 de mayo. Bajo este pretexto Cine Stanford quiere seguir abriendo caminos hacia el cine latino dedicando un ciclo al cine Chicano. En lo que va de año todavía nos habíamos programado ningún ciclo, acercarnos al Cine Latino hecho en Estados Unidos nos parece una buena manera de proponer el primero del año.

Es un registro que se vienen dando desde finales de los años 60, pero es entre finales de los 90 y la primera década del siglo XXI donde el cine Chicano ha dado un salto espectacular y ha posicionado el cine Latino hecho en Estados unidos en los mejores festivales independientes.

Sin alejarse de una crítica social sobre las dificultades de lo que significa ser Latino en Estados unidos, unido a los tabúes que la propia comunidad ha creado en su comunidades, el Cine Chicano se muestra abierto a reflexiones, pero pidiendo respeto y justicia y sus derechos como ciudadanos de este país.

Nos iremos dejando llevar desde cine mas reivindicativo sobre los derechos migrantes en este país hasta historias cotidianas que reflejan como culturalmente la comunidad latina se ha ido adaptando a su nueva casa.

El ciclo estará compuesto por las siguientes películas.

Les invitamos a compartir este nuevo ciclo, más cercano a nuestro entorno dado que muchas de las películas han sido rodadas y ambientadas en California y conociendo las reflexiones y puntos de vista expuestos en las películas desde la comunidad Latina nacida en Estados Unidos.

CHICANO MOVIE SERIES

"Cesar Chavez Day" last April and the upcoming celebration of "Cinco de Mayo" bring CineStanford the perfect excuse to open new avenues to the Latin Cinema by dedicating our first film series of this year to the Latin cinema made in the US, the Chicano Cinema.
Chicano Cinema origins date from the late 60's, but it is not until the 90's and the first decade of  the 21st century when this cinema made a spectacular rise and positioned Latin movies made by mexican americans in the best independent movie festivals.
The chicano movies prompt us to a reflection on the social difficulties that Latins face in the US, while asking for respect, justice and equal rights as citizens of this country. We will let ourselves be swept away by movies that range from strong calls for immigrant rights to the everyday reality of Latin communities adapting to their new home.
Our Chicano movie series will include:

The story of how a maid called Raquel, who has worked for over 20 years in one affluent Chilean household, rediscovers herself. La Nana is a microcosm of Latin social hierarchy while also focusing on one woman's journey to free herself from a mental servitude of her own making.

1968. Ignacio Carrillo, un juglar que durante años recorrió pueblos y regiones llevando cantos con su acordeón, toma la decisión de hacer un último viaje, a través de toda la región norte de Colombia, para devolverle el instrumento a su anciano maestro, y así nunca más volver a tocar. Junto a un joven, Fermín, emprende un recorrido por la enorme diversidad de la cultura caribeña, viviendo todo tipo de aventuras y encuentros. Seleccionada por Colombia como candidata al Oscar 2010 en la categoría de película de habla no inglesa.

For most of his life, Ignacio Carrillo traveled the villages of northern Colombia, playing traditional songs on his accordion, a legendary instrument said to have once belonged to the devil. He eventually married and settled in a small town, leaving the nomadic life behind. But after the traumatic death of his wife, he vows to never play the accursed accordion again, and embarks on one last journey to return the instrument to its rightful owner. On the way, Ignacio is followed by Fermín, a spirited teenager determined to become his apprentice. Tired of loneliness, Ignacio accepts the young man as his pupil and together they traverse the vast Colombian terrain, discovering the musical diversity of Caribbean culture. Hardened by a life of solitude, Ignacio tries to discourage Fermín from following in his footsteps, but destiny has different plans for them.

La irrupción del periodista Manuel Cueto en la vida del escritor Joaquín Góñez, a instancias de la editorial para la que Joaquín está escribiendo su último libro, provocará un gran desasosiego en la solitaria vida de este hombre que vive de espaldas al mundo y rehuye sus propios recuerdos. Acostumbrado a la soledad, el encuentro con el joven periodista despertará en él emociones olvidadas que lo transportan a la época de su niñez y a su locos años de juventud en Buenos Aires: los errores de la inexperiencia, el recuerdo de los amigos, de la lealtad, la influencia del cine y del jazz, el sabor del primer amor, y la íntima relación con sus padres, especialmente con su madre, Roma, una mujer inteligente, fuerte, comprensiva y comprometida con los ideales de juventud de su hijo. When journalist Manuel Cueto is hired to type novelist Joaquín Góñez's last book, his presence provokes an avalanche of feelings that bring Joaquín to the edge of emotions and memories that had lain dormant in the solitude of the last stages of his creative life. Accustomed to years of loneliness, Joaquín finds in the young journalist a bridge to the forgotten years of his youth in the 60's and 70's, during his wild years in Buenos Aires. April 5th "El Sueño del Caiman" by Beto Gómez

Iñaki (Daniel Guzmán) es un malvividor que sustenta sus días como ladrón a base de pequeños golpes de poca monta. Pero tras un atraco fallido se ve obligado a salir de España y hui hacia México, donde vive su padre. Allí descubrirá muchas cosas, mentiras y verdades de su vida, en el seno de un grupo de soñadores.

A thief discovers that crime runs in the family in this playfully dark comedy from Mexico. Inaki (Daniel Guzman) is a petty thief who makes his way pulling stickups with an elderly partner in crime (Francisco Rabal). The old man dies in the midst of a robbery, which attracts more police attention than Inaki is used to, and he flees to Mexico until things cool down. In Guadalajara, Inaki finds himself crossing paths with Patxi (Kandido Uranga), his father, with whom Inaki hasn't always been on good terms.

Biopic del dibujante de cómics español Manuel Vázquez (Madrid, 1930-Barcelona, 1995), creador de famosos tebeos como "La familia Cebolleta" o "Anacleto, agente secreto". Barcelona, años 60. Es primavera y Vázquez respira la vida a pleno pulmón. Sus personajes -las Hermanas Gilda, Anacleto, la Familia Cebolleta...- triunfan en los tebeos de la Editorial Bruguera. Mientras, el mejor dibujante de tebeos de España disfruta de lo que quiere cuando quiere, no paga nada, esquiva con ingenio a sus acreedores, burla y tima a sus jefes y se casa alegremente coleccionando una familia tras otra. Hasta que un gris contable de su editorial decide que debe pasar por el aro como todo hijo de vecino. March 22nd " Para que no me olvides" by Patricia Ferreira

Irene (Emma Vilarasau) vive con Mateo (Fernando Fernán-Gómez), su padre, y con su hijo David (Roger Coma), un joven de 22 años. La convivencia es armoniosa y feliz, pero surge un conflicto: David, que es un brillante estudiante de arquitectura, ha decidido irse a vivir con su novia Clara (Marta Etura), una cajera de hipermercado. Pese a su talante liberal, Irene no logra entender una relación tan dispar. Sin embargo, David encuentra en su abuelo la complicidad necesaria para llevar a cabo sus planes. Mateo es un anciano octogenario y vitalista a pesar de su dura historia: era un niño durante la Guerra Civil española (1936-1939), y en ella perdió su casa y a toda su familia. Pero nada de eso pudo con su energía y sus ganas de vivir. Un día, sin embargo, Mateo llega con una terrible noticia.

Patricia Ferreira has got a lot of interesting things to tell in this movie, but she can't. Unfornately, the story goes of her hands like fresh water. Although the actors are brilliant, for example Fernando Fernán Gómez, who is absolutely wonderful in this character, or the beautiful Emma Vilarasau and the young Marta Etura...

March 15h " No habrá paz para los malvados" by Enrique Urbizu

Madrid, principios del siglo XXI. Un día, el inspector de policía Santos Trinidad, volviendo a casa muy borracho, se ve involucrado en un triple asesinato. Pero hay un testigo que consigue escapar y que podría incriminarlo. Santos emprende una investigación destinada a localizar y a eliminar al testigo. Mientras tanto, la juez Chacón, encargada de la investigación del triple crimen, avanza meticulosamente en la búsqueda del asesino hasta que descubre que lo que parecía un simple caso de tráfico de drogas es, en realidad, algo mucho más peligroso.

The police inspector Santos Trinidad gets involved in a triple murder but there is a witness that manages to escape and could incriminate him. Santos begins an investigation to find and eliminate him. Meanwhile, Judge Chacon, who is investigating the triple murder, goes on looking for the murderer but what seems a simple case of drugs actually is something far more dangerous.

SINOPSIS:

Fausta (Magaly Solier) padece de "La teta asustada", una enfermedad que se transmite por la leche materna de mujeres maltratadas durante la época del terrorismo en el Perú. Los infectados nacen sin alma, porque del susto se escondió en la tierra, y cargan un terror atávico que les aísla por completo. Pero Fausta esconde algo más; guarda un secreto que no quiere revelar, hasta que la súbita muerte de su madre desencadenará hechos inesperados que transformarán su vida y la de otros. Seleccionada por Perú como candidata al Oscar 2010 en la categoría de película de habla no inglesa.

STORYLINE:

Fausta is suffering from a rare disease called the Milk of Sorrow, which is transmitted through the breast milk of pregnant women who were abused or raped during or soon after pregnancy. While living in constant fear and confusion due to this disease, she must face the sudden death of her mother. She chooses to take drastic measures to not follow in her mother's footsteps.

Esta es una historia de amigos que se atreven a cruzar esa delgada línea que separa la amistad del amor y que cambia la vida para siempre. Daniel, un joven y ambicioso chef español, acaba de conseguir su sueño: una plaza en el prestigioso restaurante de Thomas Wackerle en Zurich. Las protagonistas son una mujer madura (Bening), la hija (Naomi Watts) que dio en adopción 35 años antes y Lucy, una mujer negra (Kerry Washington) que quiere adoptar un niño. Sus relaciones amorosas con los hombres, con sus hijos, con sus madres constituyen la trama de esta historia. A instancias de su madre, Karen abandonó a la niña que tuvo con 14 años. 36 años después, mientras sigue lamentando su pérdida, encuentra a un hombre que está dispuesto a darle una familia y a aportar un poco de alegría a su vida. Miss Bala tells the story of Laura, a young woman whose aspirations of becoming a beauty queen turn against her, delivering her into the hands of a gang that's terrorizing northern Mexico. Although Laura succeeds in winning the beauty queen crown, her experiences as an unwilling participant in Mexico's violent war leave her shaken and transformed.

SINOPSIS:

Desde que su mujer sufrió quemaduras en todo el cuerpo a raíz de un accidente de coche, el doctor Robert Ledgard, eminente cirujano plástico, ha dedicado años de estudio y experimentación a la elaboración de una nueva piel con la que hubiera podido salvarla; se trata de una piel sensible a las caricias, pero que funciona como una auténtica coraza contra toda clase de agresiones, tanto externas como internas. Para poner en práctica este hallazgo revolucionario es preciso carecer de escrúpulos, y Ledgard no los tiene. Pero, además, necesita una cobaya humana y un cómplice. Marilia, la mujer que lo cuidó desde niño, es de una fidelidad perruna: nunca le fallará. El problema será encontrar la cobaya humana.

STORYLINE:

In honor of his late wife who died in a flaming car accident, scientist, Dr. Robert Ledgard, is trying to synthesize the perfect skin which can withstand burns, cuts or any other kind of damage. As he gets closer to perfecting this skin on his flawless patient, the scientific community starts growing skeptical and his past is revealed that shows how his patient is closely linked to tragic events he would like to forget.
