Miguel (Cristian Mercado) es un pescador de pueblo, casado y a punto de ser padre, que tiene un romance secreto con Santiago, un pintor forastero. Miguel se enfrenta a un gran dilema cuando Santiago se ahoga accidentalmente y regresa después de muerto a pedirle que encuentre su cuerpo en el mar y lo entierre según los rituales del pueblo para que su alma descanse.


Miguel (Cristian Mercado) is a young fisherman of Cabo Blanco, a small village in northern Peru with specific traditions regarding death. He is married to Mariela (Tatiana Astengo), who is pregnant with their first son, but he also has a secret affair with a male painter called Santiago (Manolo Cardona).
Santiago accidentally drowns at sea, and his ghost returns to ask Miguel to find his body, in order to bury it with their village's rituals.

The Spanish/Argentinian co-production revolves around a complicated plan concoted to prevent the wife of Spain's dictator General Franco getting her hands on jewels once owned by Argentina's fabled first lady Eva Perón - 'Evita' for short. And for the most part journeyman director Eduard Cortés juggles its romantic, comic and dramatic elements with slick, audience-friendly aplomb.

Thursday October 24t. [REC] - HALLOWEEN @ CINESTANFORD

Cada noche, Ángela (Manuela Velasco), una joven reportera de una televisión local, sigue con su cámara a un grupo profesional distinto. Esta noche le toca entrevistar a los bomberos y tiene la secreta esperanza de poder asistir en directo a un impactante incendio. Pero la noche transcurre tranquilamente. Y cuando, por fin, reciben la llamada de una anciana que se ha quedado encerrada en su casa, no le queda otro remedio que seguirlos durante la misión de rescate. Violeta Went to Heaven (Spanish: Violeta se fue a los cielos) is a 2011 Chilean biopic about singer and folklorist Violeta Parra, directed by Andrés Wood. The film is based on an eponymous book, a biography, written by Ángel Parra, Violeta's son with Luis Cereceda Arenas. He collaborated on the film.Nevertheless, the book covers many events that could not fit into the film.

The film was selected as the Chilean entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards, but it did not make the final shortlist. It was awarded the World Cinema Jury Prize (Dramatic) at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.

No is a 2012 Chilean drama film directed by Pablo Larraín. The film is based on the unpublished play El Plebiscito, written by Antonio Skármeta. Mexican actor Gael García Bernal plays René, an in-demand advertising man working in Chile in the late 1980s. The historical moment the film captures is when advertising tactics came to be widely used in political campaigns. Thursday 20th "The Impossible" by Juan Antonio Bayona

Narra la historia real de un matrimonio español (que se convierten en el film en la familia Bennet, de origen inglés pero residentes en Japón), interpretados por Naomi Watts y Ewan McGregor, y sus tres hijos, que comienzan sus vacaciones de Navidad en Thailandia, pasando unos días en un complejo hotelero del paraíso tropical. Sin embargo, sus idílicas vacaciones quedan interrumpidas cuando en la mañana del 26 de diciembre de 2004, mientras la familia se disponía a relajarse en la piscina del hotel, queda paralizada por el miedo, cuando un devastador terremoto y tsunami de enorme barrera de agua sucia invade el recinto y arrasa con la zona costera, por lo que la familia queda separada y esto hace que desencadene en una frenética búsqueda.

Pela del Álamo, director, productor y guionista del documental N-VI nos acompañara e introducirá la sesión de este Jueves.  

Antes viajábamos por carreteras que atravesaban lugares habitados. Hoy, aquellas carreteras han sido sustituidas por autopistas aisladas del paisaje que atraviesan. Entre el punto de partida y el punto de llegada han quedado atrás los lugares de paso, donde aparentemente ya no ocurre nada. La N-VI es una de esas carreteras.

Pela del Álamo, director, producer and writer of the documentary N-VI will be introducing this Thursday's screening. 

We used to travel along roads that went through inhabited places. Now, those roads have been replaced by motorways isolated from the landscape they cross. Between the point of departure and the point of arrival we have left behind those places of passage where, apparently, nothing happens anymore. The N-VI is one of those roads.

"El Bosque Animado" By Jose Luis Cuerda

Adaptación de la novela homónima del escritor gallego Wenceslao Fernández Flórez (1885-1964). Personajes tiernos y humanos se pasean por un mundo de ensueño y protagonizan una telaraña de historias que se entrecruzan: un bandido, un pocero, una niña que trabaja, un chico que no quiere trabajar, una muchacha que emigra y un fantasma que busca compañía.

Una de las más alabadas películas españolas de las últimas décadas. El excelente guión de Azcona, la dirección de Cuerda y un soberbio reparto encabezado por el magistral Alfredo Landa consiguió arrasar entre crítica y público. Muy buena.

El bosque animado (English: The enchanted forest) is a 1987 Spanish film directed by José Luis Cuerda, based on the eponymous novel written by Wenceslao Fernández Flórez, with a script by Rafael Azcona. The film has a large ensambled cast headed by Alfredo Landa. It was a critical success winning five Goya Awards including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor.

May 9th "Hollywood contra Franco" by Oriol Porta

Hollywood contra Franco es una película documental que profundiza en el impacto que la guerra civil española y el franquismo tuvieron en el cine estadounidense de la época. Toma como hilo conductor la historia del guionista neoyorquino Alvah Bessie, que luchó en España durante la guerra civil con las Brigadas Internacionales y sufrió posteriormente el ostracismo por su compromiso en favor de la España republicana, siendo incluido en las listas negras de la industria cinematográfica.

'Hollywood against Franco' shows how the Spanish Civil War was used in Hollywood between 1937 and 1975 - in line with the trends and interests of American politics of the moment. From liberal positions in the 40-prorepublicanas with Nazism as enemy, the approach to Franco in the 50s, when the enemy was communism. The relationship between cinema and politics is told through the story of Alvah Bessie, a Hollywood screenwriter who fought as a brigade in the Spanish war. The film is constructed with clips from famous movies like 'Casablanca', 'For Whom the Bell Tolls', 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro' or 'The Way We Were', among others.

Quim va conduciendo en busca de su ex novia, cuando se pierde y queda atrapado en una especie de laberinto de caminos. A man traveling through rural Spain in search of the town where his girlfriend awaits becomes ensnared in a surreal waking nightmare in director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego's intricate thriller. April 18th "Tinta Roja" by Francisco J. Lombardi

Tinta roja es una película peruana del director peruano Francisco Lombardi, basada en la novela homónima del chileno Alberto Fuguet con guion de Giovanna Pollarolo Giglio. Trata sobre las vicisitudes de un joven periodista practicante al llegar a la redacción de un diario sensacionalista. El chico se ha criado sólo con su madre, ya que el papá se desapareció de la casa. Su jefe es un mujeriego, el fotógrafo sólo habla cuando toma fotos y al chofer de la unidad móvil le gusta citar a hombres famosos.

Two university students, Alfonso Fernandez Ferrer and his girlfriend Nadia, report to the editor of a tabloid newspaper to begin their stints as trainees. Nadia is given first choice and chooses the entertainment section as her assignment. Alfonso indicates that he too wanted the entertainment section but is advised that, since the newspaper's policy is to assign only one trainee to each section and Nadia has already chosen entertainment, Alfonso must work in a different section. To Alfonso's consternation, he is assigned to serve as a trainee to Don Saul, the editor of the police crime section.

Pepa e Iván son una pareja sentimental y ambos se dedican al doblaje de películas. Cuando Iván rompe con ella, Pepa descubre que está embarazada, y lo busca para decírselo.
Iván, por su parte, estuvo casado anteriormente con Lucía, que al dar a luz enloqueció y tuvo que ser internada en un psiquiátrico, donde es abandonada por Iván. Una noche, Lucía oye la voz de Iván en el televisor, doblando a un actor de una película. En ese momento decide fingir que está curada para salir del psiquiátrico y volver a casa con Iván, descubriendo que éste se ha separado de ella.

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Spanish: Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios) is a farcical 1988 Spanish film written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, starring Carmen Maura and Antonio Banderas. The film brought Almodóvar to widespread international attention: it was nominated for the 1988 Academy Award for Best Foreign-language film, and won five Goya Awards including Best Film and Best Actress in a Leading Role for Maura.

A woman's lover leaves her, and she tries to contact him to find out why he's left. She confronts his wife and son, who are as clueless as she. Meanwhile her girlfriend is afraid the police are looking for her because of her boyfriend's criminal activities.

La película narra la historia de dos peculiares buscavidas viajan por Latinoamérica: Orsini, un empresario pícaro, cínico e ingenioso, que se autodenomina Príncipe Orsini, y su representado, Jacob Van Oppen, un envejecido e incontrolable ex campeón mundial de Lucha Libre. Buscando mantener viva la épica que un día les unió, se embarcan en una larga gira de exhibiciones por distintos pueblos. Sin embargo, su peculiar viaje en busca de ese glorioso pasado, llega a su fin en el momento en que los acontecimientos toman un rumbo inesperado e incontrolable.

Jacob van Oppen, the former strongest man on earth, and his manager Orsini, who calls himself "the Prince", make a good living by traveling around small South American towns and organizing wrestling exhibitions. In the late nineteenth century, in the province of Entre Rios, a girl who everyone considers ugly, becomes, over time, a small woman, almost transparent and ignored by all. However, she notes with a strange eagerness and detail the world around and find signs of beauty everywhere. Thursday 14th "Invasion" by Hugo Santiago Muchnick

Invasión es un film estrenado en 1969 dirigido por el argentino Hugo Santiago Muchnick. Según el teórico del cine Ángel Faretta se trata de la obra cinematográfica más importante del cine de culto vanguardista argentino, constituyendo un ejemplo de un interfase entre el cine clásico y la nouvelle vague de estilo francés, transformándose con el tiempo en un camino posible no explotado de la cinematografía argentina. Su trama va desde una historia policial, hacia el género fantástico, con un extrañamiento progresivo de las situaciones.

La película fue aclamada por la crítica, pero un fracaso total en un nivel comercial. Prácticamente desconocida, sólo comenzó a ser vista con la reedición del film en DVD en 2008.


Invasión is an Argentine film released in 1969 and directed by Hugo Santiago. It is an example of an interphase between the classic cinema and nouvelle vague of French style. Its plot goes from a police history, towards a fantastic-oniric film, with a progressive alienism of the situations.cally acclaimed, but a total failure on a commercial level. 28th "El Mural" by Héctor Olivera

La historia relata las distintas circunstancias que llevaron al pintor David Alfaro Siqueiros a realizar, durante los meses que estuvo en Argentina en los años treinta, el famoso mural de 200 metros cuadrados, Ejercicio Plástico, en el piso, paredes y techo en forma de bóveda del sótano de la quinta Los Granados, propiedad de Natalio Félix Botana, el millonario propietario del periódico Crítica. Siqueiros realiza el mural con la colaboración de los pintores argentinos Lino Enea Spilimbergo, Antonio Berni, Juan Carlos Castagnino y el pintor uruguayo Enrique Lázaro.

Este mural es el leit motiv para contar una historia que tiene intriga, sexo, traiciones, mentiras y hasta cierto sentido del humor entre los principales personajes: Siqueiros, su esposa, la poeta uruguaya Blanca Luz Brum, Botana, su mujer Salvadora Medina Onrubia y el poeta chileno Pablo Neruda, y, como una suerte de personaje más, la quinta Los Granados, en la que transcurre la historia. La película trata de reflejar el clima político de la época y el conflicto de un pintor, defensor del concepto del arte como experiencia para las masas y comunista activo realizando en una casa privada un mural que sólo verían los amigos de su millonario dueño.


While in Argentina, renowned Mexican muralist David Siqueiros (Bruno Bichir) paints the mural “Ejercicio plástico” at the country home of newspaper owner Natalio Botana (Luis Machín). Set in the 1930s, this lovely historical reconstruction serves as a testament to the creation of a masterpiece, while depicting the controversial private and public events that shaped its materialization.

Thursday 21st "Tesis" by Alejandro Amenábar

Ángela prepara una tesis doctoral sobre la violencia audiovisual, su director de tesis, descubre accidentalmente una película y al día siguiente aparece muerto.
Ángela y Chema, un compañero de facultad, deciden llevarse la cinta, descubriendo que se trata de una película snuff-movie en la que una chica es torturada y asesinada. Un mundo audiovisual diferente y peligroso se abre ante ellos. Ángela puede ser la protagonista de la siguiente snuff-movie.


Ángela (Torrent) is a film student at the Madrid's University Complutense. Searching for research material for her thesis (hence the film's title) on audio-visual violence, she attains the friendship of Chema (Martínez), a fellow student and introvert with an encyclopedic collection of violent and pornographic films.
After her professor dies while watching a film she steals the videotape, discovering that it is a snuff film featuring a girl whom Chema recognizes as a former student at the university - and a former associate of current student Bosco (Noriega). Investigating the origins of the tape, they are drawn into the operations of a chilling snuff ring.

February 14th "Dias de Santiago" by Josué Méndez

Santiago Roman (Pietro Sibille) es un excombatiente de la Marina de Guerra del Perú que peleó contra el narcotráfico y el terrorismo en su país, y tomando parte del conflicto del Cenepa contra Ecuador de 1995. Ha pasado tanto tiempo en claustros castrenses que no sabe desenvolverse en la vida civil, y menos en una ciudad de tantos contrastes como Lima. Al final de la obra su incapacidad de integrarse le ocasionará trastornos y lo hará dejarse llevar por sus impulsos.

A 23-year-old Peruvian Navy veteran struggles to re-integrate himself into society only to hit a series of roadblocks both societal and psychological, in the feature directorial debut from Peruvian filmmaker Josue Mendez. Santiago Roman (Pietro Sibille) has just returned to Peru following six years of military service. Coolly received by his parents and unable to find a stable, well-paying job, the dejected Santiago's attempt to further his education is quickly squelched when he discovers that his military pension doesn't offer the money needed to pay his way through school. Though Santiago eventually lands a low-paying job as an inner-city taxi driver, his disdain for the scum of the city finds the formerly virile young soldier sinking into a deep-rooted depression. When a group of Santiago's former military buddies hatch a plan to rob a local bank, the conflicted veteran must choose between an honest life of poverty and an act of desperation that could end in tragedy.

February 7th "Medianeras" by Gustavo Taretto

Mariana y Martín viven en la misma manzana en diferentes edificios; pero, aunque sus caminos se cruzan, no llegan a encontrarse. Martín diseña páginas web. Mariana es arquitecta, pero trabaja como decoradora de vidrieras. Además de desilusiones recientes, los dos tienen muchas cosas en común. Viven en el centro de Buenos Aires. La ciudad los une y a la vez los separa.

Sidewalls (Medianeras) is a clever romantic comedy examining with charm how the architecture of a city conditions the lives of two of its residents. Taretto pays homage to the city of Buenos Aires as he reflects on how urban chaos, as well as new technologies, can unite people but also keep them apart (as the sidewalls of the title). Mixing animation, photography and graphic art he reveals the characters' isolation and anxieties that are a staple of modern life in a noisy city that nonetheless has an irresistible charm.

January 31th "El viento se llevo lo que" by Alejando Agresti

En un pequeño pueblo de la Patagonia argentina, aislado del resto del mundo, el cine es el único entretenimiento y contacto con el mundo exterior. Un día Soledad, una mujer de Buenos Aires, roba el taxi en el que trabaja y llega al pueblo al tratar de huir lo más lejos posible de su entorno. Allí descubrirá el peculiar comportamiento de sus vecinos, condicionado por el cine y las condiciones de proyección de las películas (cuyos rollos se alteran de la misma forma que el título de la película), y se enamorará del crítico del pueblo, un apasionado de un actor francés ya retirado.

Argentine director Alejando Agresti directed this surreal, allegorical Argentine-French-Dutch- Spanish comedy-drama. Winner of the "Golden Shell Grand Prize" at the 1998 San Sebastian Film Festival, the absurdist tale is set during the '70s. Young Buenos Aires cabdriver Soledad (Vera Fogwill), tired of fending off molesting passengers and dealing with her exploitative boss, keeps driving her cab straight out of the city and into the mountains, arriving at a remote and dusty Patagonian village, Rio Pico. The town's only contact with the outside world is a cinema which shows film reels out of sequence or upside-down -- as referenced in the title's reversal of Gone With the Wind. This has impacted on local inhabitants, causing them to speak in non sequiturs. Soledad checks into an inn run by Doña Maria (Angela Molina), and when locals find out she was a journalism student, they ask her to host their newsreels about life in Rio Pico.
